Accident & Emergency Datamart
The Accident and Emergency (A&E) datamart has been in existence since June 2007. It was rebuilt and re-launched to NHS Boards in January 2011 and included some new additional fields. The datamart contains data from June 2007 to the present day on patient attendances at Emergency Department (ED), Minor Injuries Units (MIU's) and community hospital A&E's across NHS Scotland.
There are two types of data submitted: episode, which larger hospitals with ED’s usually submit which contains a detailed record for each attendance, and aggregate level which smaller sites such as MIU’s, or community hospital submit which only contains total attendance figures. The smaller sites only submit aggregate data as they do not have the information systems, and support to enable detailed patient based information.
Data files are received from all 14 NHS Boards via swift upload. The data submitted by Boards is either episode level data, or aggregate level data.
Checks are carried out to ensure that the files are in the correct format, and contain only valid codes for the datamart. Files that fail validation generate an error message which is returned to the Board.

Files that pass validation are loaded into the datamart; business objects reports are run to ensure all submitted files have successfully loaded and the record count for the files are as expected.
Once A&E files are loaded onto the datamart, a suite of data quality reports are run against the data.
The reports are:
- Daily attendances
- Completeness of each data item over a 4 month period
- Use of Unknown/other
- Discharge destination report
- Patient flow report
These reports generally show good consistency of recording between months, however the Boards are contacted if any changes are noted. If there are any changes in data then the Boards are asked to either resubmit their data, or to ensure that the following months data contains the information that was missing. Any explanations from the Boards are recorded in the information log, so that a record is maintained.
Data Monitoring & Support
Annual site meetings are arranged with NHS Boards and provide opportunity to:
- Update Boards on any changes that are occurring within PHI/ISD e.g. the A&E dataset review
- Gain a greater understanding of the issues faced by Boards and how these impact on data collection
- Update PHI/ISD of changes to services, personnel and IT systems within the Boards.
