2012/13 National Statistics Publication timetable

Over the past year there has been an increasing demand from the public and key stakeholders to have more frequent workforce information reports made available for national use. In response to this, it has been agreed by the ISD Workforce Statistics Steering group and ISD Workforce Technical Reference group that workforce statistics should be published on a quarterly basis and this is supported by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. The quarterly publication cycle will also support the refresh of the Workforce Planning Framework that provides a methodology to help Boards focus how their plans will deliver the three quality ambitions. Including what the impact on future services will be and identifying workforce solutions for the future measured against the agreed indicators.

A letter to publicise this new 'NHSSCOTLAND Workforce national statistics quarterly reporting cycle' [214kb] was issued to all NHS Boards during March 2011.

Quarter 4 (2011/12) - published 29th May 2012

Workforce Information published in May 2012 included information on:

• All staff in post information by trend and band
• Vacancies (Nursing and midwifery, Consultant and Allied Health Professions) ¹
• Staff turnover
• Psychology Workforce Planning Project ²
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Workforce Project ³
• Nursing and Midwifery Agency ⁴ and Bank nurses
• Staff Governance
  • Sickness Absence
  • Equality and Diversity (including Religion, Ethnic Group, Sexual Orientation,Transgender Status, Disability)
• General Dental Service staff in post ⁵

Quarter 1 (2012/13) - published 28th August 2012

Workforce Information published in August 2012 included information on:

• All staff in post information by trend and band
• Vacancies (Nursing and midwifery, Consultant and Allied Health Professions) ¹
• Staff turnover
• Psychology Workforce Planning Project ²
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Workforce Project ³

Quarter 2 (2012/13) - published 27th November 2012

Workforce Information published in November 2012 will include information on:

• All staff in post
• Vacancies (Nursing and midwifery, Consultant, Allied Health Professions and Pharmacy) ¹
• Staff turnover
• Psychology Workforce Planning Project ²
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Workforce Project ³
• Consultant Contract ⁶
• Nursing and Midwifery student intakes and students in training ⁷
• Nursing and Midwifery student attrition rates ⁷
• General Dental Service staff in post ⁵

Quarter 3 (2012/13) - published 26th February 2013

Workforce Information published in February 2013 will include information on:

• All staff in post information by trend and band
• Vacancies (Nursing and midwifery, Consultant and Allied Health Professions) ¹
• Staff turnover
• Psychology Workforce Planning Project ²
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Workforce Project ³

Data Sources

All statistics, unless stated otherwise, are derived from the Scottish Workforce Information Standard System (SWISS).

1. Information is returned directly to ISD on the ISD(M)36 form by each NHS Board where vacancies are detailed.
2. Information is captured on the National Live Oracle Database, entered by NHS Board Psychology Heads of Service and/or Specialty.
3. Information is captured on the National Live Oracle Database, entered by NHS Board CAMHS Clinical Leads.
4. Information is returned directly to ISD on the ISD(M)18 form by each NHS Board where agency usage is detailed.
5. General Dental Service's workforce information is sourced from the Management Information and Dental Accounting System (MIDAS).
6. Information is returned directly to ISD on the ISD(M)53 form by each NHS Board where new consultant contract details are captured.
7. Nursing and Midwifery student intakes, students in training and student attrition rates are sourced from NHS Education for Scotland.

1. The dates associated with the response to the data quality reports will play a pivotal part of the publication cycle, as the extracts used to derive the published statistics will be taken 4 days after the submission of these reports.
